After fourteen years with us, we lost our lab Bailey in September of 2019. We want her to continue to be able to hunt with us, so I carved a decoy to contain some of her ashes. The decoy is an exposed wing black duck, and is hollow and self righting.
The Gathering 2019
I entered four categories at this competition in 2019. All the decoys are self righting, hollow white cedar with a basswood head and painted in acrylics. All four birds took second place ribbons.
The Gathering 2018
The featured species for the World Cup of Duck Decoys at The Gathering 2018 was the pintail. I entered the bird shown below. It has a hollow body of white cedar with a head of basswood and an inletted “sprig” of oak. The bird is self righting and painted in acrylics. I left the sprig short because the molt is rarely fair enough along during the Minnesota duck season to see a bird with a full length tail.
